Walter James Morgan was born in Lode (Newmarket Q2-1895 3B:5536) son of Boadicea MORGAN.
1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Longmeadow, Lode with his grandfather Denis MORGAN [75] farm labourer; grandmother Susan [69] born Bottisham; uncles Denis [27] a shepherd, John [23] carter on farm, Henry [19] farm labourer; and his mother Boadicea MORGAN [38]. All, except his grandfather, were born in Lode. 1911 census...Aged 16, he was a milker, still at Longmeadow with his widower grandfather, his mother and uncles Dennis Alfred (shepherd) and John (farm labourer). |

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
His battery was fighting in Gallipoli so he must have been wounded there, and brought back to Alexandria. As his Army records have not been found it is impossible to say where exactly he was wounded. His death was recorded in the Newmarket Journal of 21st August 1915:- LODE - DEATH OF DRIVER MORGAN - The sad news has been received of the death, In Alexandria Hospital, of Driver Walter J.Morgan, son of Mrs Morgan of Long Meadow, Lode. Drover Morgan was in the Royal Field Artillery, and was 20 years of age. He landed in Gallipoli about April 26th, was wounded on May 11th, and died at Alexandria on July 10th. Driver Morgan was well known and much liked in around Lode, and much sympathy will be felt for Mrs Morgan in the loss of her only son.
